(ARA) - Parents and students will do well to get their vehicles in shape before winter arrives, according to the pros and the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Many breakdowns can be avoided entirely by routine maintenance. The following tips from ASE should give parent and student alike a road map to fall car care.
First things first — Read your owner s manual and follow the manufacturer s recommended service schedules.
Engine Performance — Get engine driveability problems (hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected at a good repair shop. Cold weather will make existing problems worse. Replace dirty filters air, fuel, PCV, etc.
Fuel — Put a bottle of fuel de-icer in your tank once a month to help keep moisture from freezing in the fuel line. Note, too, that a gas tank that s kept filled helps prevent moisture from forming.
Oil — Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual — more often (every 3,000 miles or so) if your driving is mostly stop-and-go or consists of frequent short trips.
Cooling System — The cooling system should be flushed and refilled as recommended. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. (A 50/50 mix of anti-freeze and water is usually recommended.) If you re doing your own work, never remove the radiator cap until the engine has thoroughly cooled! The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses should be checked by a certified auto technician.
Heater/Defroster — The heater and defroster must be in good working condition for passenger comfort and driver visibility.
Windshield Wipers — Replace old blades. If your climate is harsh, purchase rubber-clad (winter) blades to fight ice build-up. Stock up on windshield washer solvent; you ll be surprised how much you use. Carry an ice-scraper.
Battery — The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment. Routine care: Scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; re-tighten all connections. If battery caps are removable, check fluid level monthly.
A word of caution: Removal of cables can cause damage or loss of data/codes on some newer vehicles. Check your manual. Be sure to avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves.
Lights — Inspect all lights and bulbs; replace burned out bulbs; periodically clean road grime from all lenses. To prevent scratching, never use a dry rag.
Exhaust System — Your vehicle should be placed on a lift and the exhaust system examined for leaks. The trunk and floorboards should be inspected for small holes. Exhaust fumes can be deadly.
Tires — Worn tires will be of little use in winter weather. Examine tires for remaining tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. Check tire pressure once a month. Let the tires cool down before checking the pressure. Rotate as recommended. Don t forget your spare, and be sure the jack is in good condition.
Emergencies — Carry gloves, boots, blankets, flares, a small shovel, sand or kitty litter, tire chains, a flashlight, and a cell phone. Put a few high-energy snacks in your glove box.

Car Care Tips for Students and Parents at:

An automobile is something more than an engine on four wheels. It is more than just another mode of transport. An automobile is the reflection of the personality and tastes of its owner. A person who owns a Rolls Royce is probably a person who gives top priority to quality and class. A person who owns a sleek and trendy sports car is probably an aggressive person who likes the looks along with the stuff. An automobile is an indicator of your status and financial wealth. However, automobiles do not come cheap. If at all you intend to pay for your dream automobile from your own pocket, you will have to earn a lot of money before you actually own the car.
Since it will take a lot of time for people to accumulate enough money to finance their car at one go, the facility of auto loans is offered to the public. Auto loans can be obtained directly from financial institutions that are in the business of accepting deposits and offering loans. For the sake of convenience of the customer, almost all the car dealers provide the facility of auto loans.
In the case of the former, the provider of the loan is not associated with the seller of the automobile. The two transactions of purchase of automobile and obtaining the loan for purchase of the automobile are separate. In the latter instance, the financial institution and the car dealer enter in to a mutually beneficial agreement to provide finance for purchase of automobiles.
Such an agreement is beneficial to all the parties concerned. The customer gains as he or she gets can purchase the automobile and obtain an auto loan to finance the purchase at the same place. Cumbersome paperwork and multiple negotiations can be avoided. The car dealer gains by the fact that customers prefer a car dealer who provides the facility of auto loans to a car dealer who does not do so. The lending institution gains by the fact that it is assured of borrowers. This agreement enables it to shift the burden of advertising and marketing upon the car dealer.
Getting an auto loan from a lending institution will be cheaper for the borrower. However, the borrower will have to take up the burden of finding a lender offering the favorable terms and conditions that he or she is looking for. Opting for auto loans offered by car dealers enables the borrower to get a tailor made deal suited to his or her needs. However, opting for an auto loan through a car dealer will be costlier due to the presence of the middleman.
An auto loan is pretty similar to any other loan. Money is borrowed and repaid in installments along with interest charges. Apart from auto loans, there is a flourishing market for refinancing of auto loans and auto loans for borrowers having bad credit.

When you arrange your motor insurance policy, you get the chance to stipulate how much excess you are willing to pay. This means that if your car is repaired through your insurance policy, you have to pay a certain amount towards the cost. You will usually have to make the payment direct to the garage that fixes your car. If your car is badly damaged and is consequently written off, the insurance company will give you a settlement payment, minus the excess that has been agreed on the policy.
If the accident was no fault of your own, then the other driver’s insurance company will reimburse you for the amount of the excess payment. However, not all situations are that simple, because what happens if the other driver does not have any insurance?
It is illegal for any driver in the UK to drive uninsured (see the 1988 Road Traffic Act, section 143), all drivers must be insured so as to cover the costs if they cause damage to a third party. Unfortunately, many drivers take the law into their own hands and choose to drive uninsured. It’s impossible to make an accurate estimate of how many people are driving uninsured, of course, most uninsured drivers aren’t going to publicise that fact.
The Department of Transport has used its own information and records to make an informed estimate, and they suggest that as many as 1 in 20 drivers are driving without insurance. Because of these people, drivers who have insurance are paying more on their premiums, and many road users are being put at risk on a daily basis. The fact that many drivers have no insurance is being considered as a growing problem in our society.
Why does it matter so much if you have an accident with an uninsured driver? Well, if the accident is their fault, the money to pay for your damages will come out of the Motor Insurers’ Bureau funds they get all their money from the industry, which is why you’re paying more on premiums. The other disadvantage is that there will be no-one to refund you the excess, so you will be out of pocket too.
What does Compulsory Excess mean?
When you sign up for your car insurance policy, you will have to choose an excess, but the insurance company will stipulate the minimum amount that they are prepared to offer you. This will be based on your driving record and your personal details, and if you are an experienced driver with a clean record, you may be offered a minimum excess of 50. The average for most drivers is 100. On the opposite end of the scale, young drivers or those with convictions or accidents that were their fault may be faced with a compulsory excess of 500.
What does Voluntary Excess mean?
You may have the opportunity to lower your premiums by agreeing to a higher excess. Your voluntary excess is the additional amount over the compulsory excess that you are prepared to pay if you need to make a claim. Because you are promising to pay the insurance company more in the event of a claim, they are able to pass on some of the savings to you, so you pay less on premiums.
My car has just been prepared but until I pay the excess, they won’t give me my car back is this normal?
Yes, all garages operate in this way. To protect yourself, give the car a full inspection when you pick it up to ensure that all the repairs have been carried out to a good standard. You also need to make sure you keep the receipt for the excess payment because you will need to show this to the third party insurer to get the money back. In case the money ends up being disputed, also get a copy of the repair schedule so the insurer can see exactly what work was carried out on your car.
